Smith’s Funeral
Anna Nicole Smith’s funeral in the Bahamas has taken place, despite last minute attempts by her mother to stop the service. Smith’s mother, Virgie Arthur had filed a last-minute motion in a Bahamian court to halt the burial and take her daughter’s body back to Texas, but it was rejected just before the memorial service started. Smith’s mother arrived in a white stretch limousine with an entourage of about 10 people. She wore a black dress and waved to the cheering crowd. Despite the court furor, hundreds of Bahamians turned out to watch Anna Nicole Smith’s coffin arrive on a private jet and make its way to the Mount Horeb Baptist Church in Nassau where it was carried along a red carpet. Around 300 guests attended a private service at the church. The mahogany coffin was carried into the white-columned Mount Horeb Baptist Church, as hundreds of tourists and fans watched from behind steel barricades guarded by Bahamian police. Some in the crowd cried out “Anna! Anna! We love you!” Her coffin was covered with a pink rhinestone-studded blanket and her portrait was displayed on the church altar. Smith’s casket was closed and the pews were festooned with pink flowers, said one of the guests. She was mourned by family and friends during the funeral service before being taken to the cemetery. A white limousine took her body to Lakeview Memorial Park cemetery where she was buried next to her son Daniel, in a ceremony watched by around 30 close friends and family members.

Appeal Rejected
The judge who ruled on who gets control of Anna Nicole Smith’s body wants her buried, and will not let her mother, Virgie Arthur stand in his way. The appeal filed by Smith’s mother, just moments after Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin’s teary decision to release Smith’s body to her daughter’s court-appointed guardian Thursday, was rejected early Monday morning, saying he wanted to preserve Smith’s dignity by having the funeral occur as quickly as possible. In the court papers, Seidlin claims that a stay would increase the “potential for adverse consequences,” adding that “Arthur seeks an indefinite stay and has shown no intent to expedite the proceedings.” Lawyers for Smith’s mother want the 4th District Court of Appeal to reconsider Judge Seidlin’s ruling. Arthur wants Smith buried in Texas. In the court filing, Arthur’s lawyer, Roberta G. Mandel, said the ruling was an inconvenience because the mother “will have to have a passport and roundtrip airplane tickets and several thousand dollars to even visit or put flowers on Smith’s grave.” Outside court, Mandel said Arthur was willing to take the fight to the state Supreme Court, if necessary.”This mother is a mother who deserves the right to bury her child,” Mandel said. “The trial court treated her as though she was nothing.” Smith’s boyfriend, Howard K. Stern, testified last week that Smith wanted to be buried in the Bahamas. Stern’s attorney Ron Rale said that Smith’s mother should let her daughter’s wish be granted.”We were hoping that she would do the right thing,” Rale said. “I believe the testimony was clear where Anna Nicole wanted to be buried, and anything that obstructs that, to complete her wishes as soon as possible, is sad.” Her funeral will not take place before Tuesday, said Richard C. Milstein, the court-appointed attorney for Smith’s 5-month-old daughter. In a news release Saturday, Milstein said he was working as quickly as possible to complete the details.
